First mission in Bukavu - in pics

Yippee – we’re off! Got both a car and security clearance. And the road was quite good, but very dusty. Olivia even reached 50 km/h a couple of times which set the UN car log beeping:)

First stop – PakBatt

Charming the Pakistanis (a couple of them were at the military school at Abottabad at the same time as I was there, great ice-breaker!)

Yup, we got the escort we wanted.

Arriving at KOKO, and got a very warm welcome. The centre helps sexually violated women and children (and some men) and also orphans. They provide both medical and psychological support, and works with social reintegration of victims.

Kitchen

Our escorts never let us out of their sight.

Olivia - great colleague (and driver)

Dropped off our escorts, and got a lovely lunch of chicken curry, biryani and naan.

It is a really beautiful country.
